BLACK AND BLACK

CELEBRATING 200 YEARS OF pHOTOGRAPHY

Later this year, celebrations will begin to mark 200 years since the invention of the camera.

Photography shapes how we see, remember, and imagine the world. But has it accurately represented Africa? Africans?

It’s not black and white.

BLACK AND BLACK  asks the question: How could the future see Africa and Africans?

Looking beyond how Africa has been photographed in the past, the exhibition explores what becomes possible when Africans hold the camera, direct the lens, and define the narrative.

We invite photographers and artists working with photographic images to submit work that reimagines, challenges, and reclaims how Africa and its people are seen.

The BLACK AND BLACK project was initiated by Afrika House and the Holmes à Court Gallery in Nairobi, and is curated by Rose Musyoki.

Our open call is now live. Thank you for considering joining the conversation.

Exhibition opens November 2026
